Political speeches and correspondence, reflecting the political climate in Ohio following the Civil War, Republican Party activities and potential Ohio Republican candidates, the disputed election of President Rutherford B. Hayes, political appointments, the resumption of species payment, and U.S. Treasury Dept. business; together with 33 scrapbooks, chiefly containing newspaper clippings (1871-1897), but also political cartoons, transcriptions of speeches published in pamphlet form, and a small amount of printed matter, following Sherman's career as both public servant and politician in the U.S. Senate (1871-1877), as Secretary of the Treasury during the Hayes administration (1877-1881), and his return to the U.S. Senate in 1881 through Jan. 1897 when he became Secretary of State under President William McKinley. Subjects of the scrapbooks include Sherman's bid and failure to receive the Republican presidential nomination in 1880, 1884, and 1888 and the roles played by his supporters; the difficult race for the U.S. Senate in 1880 when opposed by Gov. Charles Foster and in 1892 when faced by ex-Governor Joseph Foraker, providing a good understanding of these elections and Ohio politics during this time period; the silver question and if it should be freely coined, used to redeem paper currency, or play a limited role in national finance; the refinancing and paying down of the national debt occurring during the Civil War; investigation of the role of Sherman and others in resolving the dispute in favor of Rutherford B. Hayes; the trial in Louisiana of James Madison Wells and other members of the Returning Board accused of forging the returns for Vernon Parish; Sherman's brother Gen. William T. Sherman and other family members; his entire career in government; and descriptions of his homes in Mansfield, Ohio, and Washington, D.C.
