The Little Bighorn Legacy Symposium convened in Billings on 3-6 Aug. 1994. The speakers address federal Indian policy in the 1870s; Native American leadership during the Great Sioux War of the 1870s; archaeological techniques used at the Little Bighorn battle site; the myths of George Armstrong Custer in literature, in film, and in American culture; Lakota, Cheyenne, and Crow tribal interpretations of the campaigns; and U.S. military perspectives on the Great Sioux War.

Custer's paternal ancestors, Paulus and Gertrude Küster, came to the North American English colonies around 1693 from the Rhineland in Germany, probably among thousands of Palatines whose passage was arranged by the English government to gain settlers in New York and Pennsylvania.
