The Carlisle Indian Industrial School was the brainchild of a young lieutenant of the 10th United States (U.S.) Cavalry, Richard Henry Pratt. Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822 and earned degrees from Kenyon College and Harvard Law School before starting a career as a lawyer in Cincinnati. Hayes served as a major general in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1864.
