Letters (1841-1850) sent from Joseph B. Loring to his wife Mary while Loring was involved in the merchant shipping trade. Letters include descriptions of ports visited, business conditions in the ports, and life on board the ship. Ports include Machias and Wicasset, Maine; Boston; New York City; New Orleans; Pensacola, Florida; Waccamaw River and Bricksville, South Carolina; and ports in Cuba; Haiti; Bermuda; the Bahamas; British Guiana, Madeira, Port Mahon, and Malaga, Spain; and Genoa and Palermo, Italy.
