Autograph letter signed : London, to Edmund Bates, 1880 Mar. 5.

Discussing a curious book he sent that is possibly "an elaborate satire of Haydon's own on the original work" by Richard Payne Knight; thanking him on Mrs. Smetham's behalf for inquiring about payment from buyers of her husband's work; enclosing "the Tauchnitz vol[ume]"; expressing his lack of immediate concern for the "dummy drawings" of his that he currently has in his possession; indicating that he feels "sure F.W. Burton will not buy the picture you have lodged with him."
