Forty-one letters from William H. Waters to his cousins, Levi Stubbs and William McCoy Stubbs, describing life in the Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory after the Civil War and his travels in California, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and British Columbia, including material relating to the American Indians in the territory, Chief Crazy Snake (Chitto Harjo) of the Creek Nation, his opposition to U.S. land policy, his activities on behalf of the Grand Army of the Republic, and Union veterans he encountered; letters recalling his experiences as a Union soldier in occupied Washington, N.C., as a member of Company A, 1st Regiment, N.C. Volunteers (U.S.A.); and family letters including reminiscense of life in northern Beaufort County, N.C., during his youth, family greetings and news, and concern over his estranged wife, Matilda Waters; together with nineteen letters from others, family records for the Jackson, Stubbs, and Waters families, school papers, fragment of the novel, Maum Guinea, and other papers. Other correspondents include Emma H. Waters and Rev. Alexander Corvey.
