Private papers and professional files of Anne Pauline (Smith) Alford, a North Carolina Agricultural Extension Services district agent, and her husband, Frank Oliver Alford, a dentist in Charlotte, N.C. Private files include private correspondence (1904-1967) including letters to Mrs. Alford from her friends and suitors including Mr. Alford and correspondence with him during their engagement; farm papers (1943-1963) reflecting her interaction with the couple's tenants and farm operations; social organizations files (1930-1965); greeting cards/wedding invitations (1920s-1960s); college papers (1912-1937) of Mrs. Alford including lecture notes, laboratory worksheets, compositions, and other papers chiefly concerning courses taken at North Carolina State College; and miscellaneous files including biographical data, papers concerning their house in Louisburg, N.C., photographs, naval training papers of Clifford E. Smith, Mrs. Alford's brother, and notes on the Jones family to whom Mrs. Alford was related. Professional files of Dr. Alford include correspondence (1929-1966) chiefly relating to his connection with the American Dental Association and the American College of Dentists and containing information concerning the ADA's decision to endorse Crest toothpaste and the memberships' reaction, and the growing body of opinion among younger dentists that induction into the College of American Dentists was carefully controlled by a small body of older insiders; dental organizations printed material (1933-1964) which includes a subject file concerning the 1960-1961 controversy in the ADA relating to "speciality dentistry"; and North Carolina Dental Society Auxiliary files (1954-1965) including correspondence, committee reports, news releases, clippings, and other papers (1954-1955) relating to Mrs. Alford's chairmanship of the group and correspondence (1964-1965) relating to her interest in the American Academy of the History of Dentistry. Professional files for Mrs. Alford includes home demonstration material subdivided into correspondence (1919-1949) including her "personal communications" as the supervisor of the Northeastern District home extension service and includes office files Mrs. Alford's predecessors, Estelle T. Smith (1919), Eunice Penny McCrary (1920), and Mamie Sue Jones (1921-1922), together with letters relating to speaking engagements, radio talks, and contact with professional organization or suppliers of materials useful to her in her work; miscellaneous material (1917-1947); and newspapers cuttings and reference files (1923-1940); together with professional files on gardening and home beautification.
