Family correspondence (1747-1935) including letters exchanged between brothers Hector McAlester (d. 1790), who returned to Scotland in 1744 was forbidden to return to North Carolina, and Alexander McAlester, in North Carolina, discussing Hector's efforts to retrieve his business affairs concerning his North Carolina plantation called New Troy as well as an indebtedness owing to him from the estate of their mother's brother, Dugald McNeill of Lossit, who died in the colony in 1741, and including substantive information concerning emigration from Scotland to North Carolina; other correspondence of Alexander with kinsmen and friends in Scotland; correspondence of Hector's daughter, Mary (McAlester) Shannon, first with her uncle Alexander, and later with her cousin Alexander in the hope of securing at least some part of her father's share of the North Carolina property; and family correspondence including letters of McLean kinsmen, correspondence (1868-1916, 1926) of John Alexander McAllister in part relating to his interest in family history; and correspondence of Alexander Pope McAllister who reopened a correspondence with Scottish cousins and other who might help him with his research in family history. Family papers include a folder of Cumberland County, N.C., land papers; five folders of records concerning Bluff Presbyterian Church, Wade, N.C.; historical notes and a brief historical pamphlet on the Lumberton Presbyterian Church, Lumberton, N.C.; Civil War papers and stories including Capt. James S. Evans's history of Company F, 24th Regiment, North Carolina Troops (The Cumberland Plough Boys); a folder of literary papers; miscellaneous papers including three veterinary formulae; and four folders of genealogical notes relating to the McAllister, McNeill, Richardson and Whitfield/Bryan families.
