Autobiography series includes autobiography binders (1-5) relating to Arndt's family; his wife, Johanne Marie Karoline Salomon, and her family; Trinity Lutheran Church, East Saginaw, Mich., where he was pastor; Pomerania where he was born; his student years at Concordia College, Fort Wayne, Ind.; congregations in East Saginaw, Mich.; his missionary work in Michigan and Canada; his years as a teacher of science, mathematics, and U.S. history at Concordia College, St. Paul, Minn.; detailed description of his elaborate bird and insect collection; his work as assistant pastor at St. Stephanus Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Minn., and missionary work in the area; history of the villages of Quetzen and Lahde, Westphalia, Germany; and a complete church chronicle of Lahde including a shipping list of most Germans who emigrated from this area. Also includes Gottes Wunderwege, Arndt's autobiography; sermon outlines (1888-1891); church histories and minutes written or collected by Arndt for his History of the Lutheran Church of Minnesota and Other States and other materials related to the book; photographs of Saginaw, Mich.; papers relating to St. Paul, Minn.; and biographies of various clergy. China Mission series includes material extracted from various diaries Arndt kept and from his correspondence and other documents and covers his life and missionary work in China as well as a detailed account of his dismissal from the faculty of Concordia College, his family life, the debate over the correct Chinese word to use for God, China during World War I, and the political turmoil which followed. Also includes papers relating to the China Mission Society, correspondence of Arndt, his wife, and children, official correspondence from the Board of Foreign Missions and other officials of the Missouri Synod, and photographs.
