Hollerith family papers, 1880-1986.

Chiefly personal papers, business records, and real estate and financial papers, of Hollerith's wife, Lucia Beverly Talcott Hollerith (1865-1944), and their three daughters, Lucia Beverly Hollerith (1891-1982), Nannie Talcott Hollerith (1898-1985), and Virginia Hollerith (1902-1994). Topics include daily life; business concerns; shopping; charitable associations; settlement of the estates of various family members; operation of the family's farm in Mathews County, Va.; management of rental properties in Washington, D.C., and Maryland; maintenance of the family's home in Georgetown; and the process of transferring the Georgetown home to an historic preservation easement. Other family members represented (though to a much lesser extent) are Herman Hollerith and his sons, Herman Hollerith, Jr. (1892-1976), Charles Hollerith (1893-1979), and Richard Hollerith (1900-1967).

Hollerith made a significant contribution to the development of the modern electronic computer with his Hollerith Electric Tabulating System, an electronic punchcard system he developed while working for the Census Bureau. He was especially inlfuenced by John Shaw Billings, then head of Vital Statistics for the Census Bureau. Virginia Hollerith is the daughter of Herman Hollerith.
