Chiefly outgoing correspondence of Edward and Clara Doane, with family members, relating to their voyage to Ponape, including the period on the steamer Golden Rule (1865 May 20-1865 June 5), its shipwreck near Rinconda Key in the Caribbean, and subsequent voyage from Panama aboard the steamer America, experiences in Micronesia, activities as missionaries in Kyoto, Japan (1873-1877), and Edward's later return to Ponape, after the death of his wife, whereafter he was imprisoned in the Philippines during the 1887 Spanish occupation of the Caroline Islands; journals of Clara Doane, including letters to her sisters; letter (1865 May 20) from Mary A. White, written from New York, N.Y., to Mrs. A. Edwards, concerning the departure for Micronesia of Clara Doane; translations of the gospels of Luke and John and the Ponapeian Primer, possibly done by Hiram Bingham II, Minerva Clarissa Brewster Bingham, or Louisa Mitchell Lewis Gulick, all Micronesian missionaries involved in extensive translation work; printed materials; and other papers.
