Cumings family papers, 1824-1926.

Correspondence, legal documents, financial documents, maps, personal papers, printed material, photographs, and artifacts, relating chiefly to Samuel A. Cumings (1827-1885), a businessman living near Bellville, Tex., but also relating to other family members, particularly his children. Much of the material pertains to family lands in Austin and Brazoria counties and to lengthy legal battles over rights to the property. Financial documents relate to routine business and personal transactions and include memorandum books, ledgers, daybooks, and account books, most of them kept by Samuel A. Cumings, and the earliest of which predate his return to Texas as an adult in 1847. Maps include both ms. and printed items, the most significant of which is a ms. map of Texas, apparently by Stephen F. Austin, which is similar to those done by Austin in preparation for the publication of his 1830 map and which includes a delineation of colonies and notes in the hand of Austin's secretary, Samuel May Williams. Also includes a small amount of material relating to the Stickney family, including a family Bible, letters, drawings, printed material, and photographs.
