At the time of the earthquake in 1906, Plachek was working for the city of Chicago in the architecture department. A week after the disaster, Plachek and a group of other architects were sent to San Francisco to study the effects of fire and earthquakes on buildings. Plachek stayed in the Bay Area a number of months before returning to Chicago to make his report. He later returned to California where he worked for the state for about four years.
