The first part relates to West's travels around the world with the U.S. Navy (1887-1891), and includes photographs of his ship, the Enterprise, along with historic landmarks. The second section documents the early history of the Freedmen's Hospital in Washington, D.C. and the Howard University Medical School, and includes photographs of students attending anatomy classes and faculty members.
