George Roy Hill was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1922 to George R. and Helen Frances Hill. After receiving his B.A. degree in music from Yale University in 1943, he served two years in the Marine Corps as a transport plane pilot. In 1949, Hill received a B.Litt. in literature and music from Trinity College, Dublin, and made his acting debut with Cyril Cusack at the Abbey Theatre in London.
