Letter (ALS) to Spencer Phips, lieutenant governor of Massachusetts, forwarding news of an impending Indian attack, as well as the possibility of a dangerous shift in allegiance: the Norridgewock and Penobscot Indians may soon break with the English to join the French and their Canadian Indian allies.

Spencer Phips (1685-1757) was born "Spencer Bennett" in Rowley, Mass., but was adopted at an early age by his uncle Gov. William Phips (1651-1695). He was educated at Harvard (1703) and settled in Cambridge, Mass., where he served as state representative in 1721, then town councillor, 1721-1732; he became the state's Lieutenant Governor, 1732-1757. Frank T. Siebert was a pathologist, self-taught linguist and collector of books on North American Indians and the American frontier. He was dedicated to preserving the Penobscot language and was the compiler of a Penobscot dictionary. Bryant Richard Garrett, the donor of the collection, worked closely with Dr. Siebert and carries on the work of documenting and preserving the Penobscot language.
