The collection contains: letters, 1865-1870, from Lucinda B. Smith of Portland, Oregon, to her sister Mary Sophia Campbell; three diaries, 1892 and 1900, of her husband, Ferdinand C. Smith, two of which were written on a trip to Europe in 1892; and ledger and legal documents relating to the Ferdinand C. Smith estate, 1903-1929.

Ferdinand C. Smith was a native of Germany who settled in Portland, Oregon in the late 19th century. Around 1865 he established an iron works in partnership with his brother Charles Emil Smith. In 1883 the brothers were joined by J. Frank Watson and the firm became the Smith and Watson Iron Works. Smith's grandson, Ferdinand C.
