Bound typed transcriptions of personal correspondence of the Garrett and related Ball and Johnston families of Monroe, La. Early letters are those of Isaiah Garrett, a lawyer, to members of his family in Missouri, and legal and political letters to Thomas M. Smith, W. Underwood, R. Duckworth, and Edward Sparrow (1840-1842). Later correspondence is that of the Ball and Johnston families. Eliza Ball Johnston is the recipient of letters from her husband, Capt. John Washington Johnston, discussing army conditions at Pensacola, Fla.; and from her brother, Colonel Edward Ball, relating events of campaigns in Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee (1861-1864). Postwar correspondence is that of John Washington and David White Johnston (1876-1879). Papers also include a cookbook.
