Frederick Schwatka. Explorer, born in Galena, Ill., where he later worked at printing. Attended Willamette University. Graduated from West Point, held army posts, while studying law and medicine. Became interested in exploration and convinced the American Geographical Society to back an attempt to discover the fate of the expedition of Sir John Franklin to the Arctic, thirty years earlier.
