Letters, 1861-1862.

A group of letters related chiefly to Spafford's experiences of military service during the Civil War. He wrote about the Union Army defense line surrounding Washington, D.C., skirmishes with Confederate troops, camp life, and other army activities. Also, he often included news about friends and fellow soldiers. The letters were sent primarily to his friend Amelia, who lived near Bennington, Vermont.
