In 1816, Baton Rouge was selected for an ordnance depot to supply troops in New Orleans and posts up the Mississippi and Red Rivers. The arsenal was constructed ca. 1818-1819. In 1861 Confederate troops occupied the arsenal until the United States Army re-occupied it in 1862. In 1869 the buildings were transferred from the Ordnance Dept. to the Quartermaster's Dept.
