Carlos Cobb letters, 1860-1864.

Two autograph letters, signed, from Carlos Cobb. The first, dated Buffalo, November 23, 1860, is addressed to his uncle Gideon Cobb in Rochester. In it Cobb makes reference to the newly-elected president and the state of the financial sector: "Commerce is at a standstill. Lincoln currency [ie. Illinois] is rushing in to the brokers at 10 @ 30 percent discount ... and as for the scrip for 160 acres of land that we 'the landless' were to get when we elected Lincoln president, why confound it all the brokers don't quote it worth a ___." The second letter, dated New York, October 3, 1864, is addressed to Lewis Selye and discusses a number of financial matters.
