Minutes, Reports, Planning Files 1977-1978

Records in this series comprise those pertaining to the fifth deaconess conference held by the Deaconess Community of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) July 25-28, 1977, at St. Joseph's-in-the-Hills, Malvern, Pennsylvania. The records date from 1977-1978 and include minutes, business correspondence, circular letters, reports, printed remarks, an issue paper, pre-conference orientation material, orders of service, evaluation forms, and budgets. This series includes summary reports from the coordinator for community life, the deaconess administrative assistant for the LCA's Division for Professional Leadership (DPL), the deaconess council, and the deaconess conference chairperson. Also included is a copy of the paper "Crisis in the Diaconate: An Issue Paper," by Dr. Marvin A. Johnson of the DPL. This paper was distributed to deaconesses prior to the conference as preparatory material to read and comment upon with constructive criticism at conference sessions. This paper and its dissemination among the deaconesses for comment represent the first steps that took place in 1977 for reevaluating the relationship between the deaconess community and the LCA.
