Manuscript compilation of verse and prose selections from various French writers, such as Hugo, Lamartine, Gautier, de Vigny, and others, including a full-length comedy, "Le Village" by Octave Feuillet. The text is ornamented, with full-page illustrations (some copied from modern masters). Bound in full dark brown morocco with silk damask doublures and inner gilt dentelles, by Rivière. In morocco slipcase.

Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) was born in Mâcon, France into the aristocracy. His father was imprisoned during the French Revolution but escaped the guillotine. After briefly serving in the military, Lamartine joined the diplomatic corps as secretary to the French embassy at Naples.
