John K. Gerhart collection, 1929-1971.

The majority of this collection consists of photographs taken during General Gerhart's thirty plus years' military career, both stateside and abroad. Also of importance within the collection are his flight logs which begin with his first flight at March Field in 1929 and his medals which include the Distinguished Flying Cross.

John Koehler Gerhart (1907-1981) was born in Saginaw, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1928 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy. After graduating from Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve.
