Typescript letter (1 p.) from the manager of The Grolier Bookshop in Kansas City, Missouri, Frank Glenn, addressed to Fred W. Allsop, the buyer of a 1st edition book, "The Art of Bookbinding" by Joseph William Zaehnsdorf. Glenn is forwarding to Allsop a handwritten letter (1 p.) and gifts he has received from Zaehnsdorf Ltd in London, signed by E. [Earnest] Zaehnsdorf, after informing them that the book had been sold. Zaehnsdorf writes that he is glad the book has found a "worthy owner" and describes in great detail the bookplate that used by his father as an inspiration for the book cover. He includes as a gift to the new owner of the book a copy of the bookplate [not present in the collection] and a five pound check signed by his father from the City Bank, Limited, Shaftesbury Avenue Branch W.C. in London (May 26,1892) "that may provide an added interest to the owner of this book." The letters and check are written on the business stationery of each concern.

Joseph William Zaehnsdorf, author of the Art of Bookbinding, was the only son of Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886). The elder Zaehnsdorf was a native of Budapest and became one of Europe's most famous fine custom binders. Founded in London in 1842, his firm, Zaehnsdorf, created a wide variety of traditional and less-traditional leather bindings. The company survives today as part of Sangorski & Sutcliffe.
