Letter, October 4, 1899.

Autograph letter to Shearman's sister, October 4, 1899, from USS Castine, Port Masingluk, Mindanao, PI describing his duty aboard the USS Bennington, USS Charleston and USS Castine during the Philippine Insurrection. He describes several islands and cities that he visited, including Cebu which was shelled, Zamboanga, Mindanao, Jolo, and Manila where the Chinese control the trade. He feels that there are not enough men to subdue the islands and that it will take at least 100,000 men and a blockade. He mentions the climate and taking aboard a friendly warrior. Finally, he hopes his sister will get the allotment he left her and that all is well with his mother.
