James Worden Pope was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 6, 1846. He graduated from West Point in 1868 and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant of the 5th U.S. Infantry that June. Carr was born in Hamburg, New York. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1850, 19th in a class of 44 cadets.
