Letter, 1863 Oct. 2 (Columbia, S.C.) to Col. J[ames] W[ashington] Harrison.

Letter, 2 Oct. 1863, assigns Col. J. W. Harrison to "take immediate steps to establish a confidential chain of paid and reliable scouts to furnish the promptest information of the movements, conduct, and approach of the Enemy through the mountains from East Tennessee & North Carolina, so as to furnish me at this place and yourself as well as the officer commanding troops in the Mountain District." Penned on letterhead stationery: "State of South Carolina, Head Quarters." The recipient of this letter, James Washington Harrison (1819-1888), a lawyer from Anderson County, S.C., worked in many capacities during his career. In addition to his military service, Harrison served as a member of S.C. House of Representatives and a member of the S.C. Senate, as president of the Blue Ridge Railroad, and as editor of the Anderson Gazette newspaper.
