The diary, with entries from 1948 through 1951, covers her husband's, Stanley W. Jackson's, third and fourth years of medical school at McGill University School of Medicine, his first year of residency in psychiatry at the Royal Victorian Hospital in Montreal, and a summer at the Provincial Mental Hospital in Essondale, British Columbia. The diary covers postwar years when many of the medical students, like Jackson, were returned servicemen rather than new college graduates. "The purpose of this diary was mainly to document how the medical training prepared students not only with the medical and scientific knowledge and skills required of doctors, but also with the social skills they would need, i.e. the roles of a doctor. Secondarily, the diary included attitudes of friends, acquaintances and co-workers toward illness, doctors, and treatment of illness."
