Two A.L.s to Earl and Achsah Brewster. [1923-1934]

The first letter, dated "Thanksgiving Day" [Nov. 22, 1923], refers to Willa Cather's return to N.Y. from Europe, and her enjoyment of the Paris exhibition of the Brewsters' paintings. In the second letter, Lewis thanks Earl and Achsah Brewster for sending her a copy of their book, D.H. Lawrence: reminiscences and correspondence, and also refers to a hand injury suffered by Willa Cather.

Earl Brewster (1878-1957) and Achsah Barlow Brewster (1878-1945) were American expatriate artists. After marrying in 1910, they moved to Italy, and lived also in France, Ceylon and India. Their daughter, Harwood Barlow Brewster Picard (1912-1990) married Georges Picard in 1936 and had 2 daughters, Claire and Frances. David Herbert Richards Lawrence was born September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, near Nottingham, to Arthur Lawrence, a coal miner, and Lydia Beardsall. He attended Nottingham University College, and in 1908 he took a teaching position at Davidson Road School in Croydon.
