In his journal, B. Franklin Slaughter gives an eyewitness account of an Indian raid on the fort's livestock, which was repelled by soldiers and Indian scouts. There is a partial account of a trail-marking expedition between Fort Rice and Painted Woods, Dakota Territory. The entry for July 1 is by the surgeon's wife, Linda Slaughter, commenting on the content of her husband's journal.
