Margaret J. Gibbs Theus papers, 1901-1989.

Collection of research files associated with creation of her historical publications and her oral history interviews with S.C. residents. Consisting of letters, photographs, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, and other printed items re her research and involvement in establishing the Oral History / Folklore student publications titled, "'Round Hopkins" at Hopkins Junior High School (1977-1979); "Southern Spirit" at Florence High School (1980-1983); and "Summer Dimensions '81" in the Lexingon County School District. Files include photographs, newspaper clippings, and some notes re her publications. Includes research materials, 1901-1977, on poet Henry Timrod (1801-1877); also papers, 1964-1981, re celebration of "Mary Boykin Chesnut Day"; as well as items, 1925-1987, re Dr. Wil Lou Gray and her contributions to adult education in S.C., including a research paper completed by Theus in 1975. Other activities represented include workshops and presentations, ca. 1977-1982, conducted by Theus re oral history and folklore; her participation in the five-year Mid-South Humanities Project begun in 1978, the Richland County School District 1 Centennial in 1981; and several other organizations with which she was affiliated. Schools represented include A.C. Flora High School (Columbia, S.C.), Hopkins Junior High School (Lower Richland County, S.C.); other institutions or organizations documented include Epworth Children's Home (Columbia, S.C.), Richland School District 1, including interviews conducted for the District's centennial, and a tables, "Salary Guide for Teachers [in] Richland ..." ca. 1963-1983, chiefly for School District One, although includes some figures for District Two as well. Collection includes many photographs and snapshots used in production of the student publications documenting local history, persons, buildings, businesses, and events chiefly in or near the vicinity of Columbia, S.C.; persons interviewed and / or photographed include Modeska Simkins, giving an interview re the Victory Savings Bank (Southern Spirit, Winter 1982/1983); J.L. Pigge re his experience as a prisoner of war near Munich, Germany during World War II; Mrs. Lottie McBeth Simons (b.1895), African American midwife of Eastover, S.C.; and various businesses, such as Kafer Bakery of Florence and Columbia, S.C., and Leon Ritter, furrier; "Groucho," the owner of Groucho's Deli; Mason Gibbes and Gibbes Machinery Company.

Margaret Jones Gibbs Theus (d. 1995), a resident of Columbia, S.C., was the wife of Dr. Walter W. Theus; graduated from University of South Carolina with a master's degree in English and education; she taught in the S.C.
