James R. Spence grew up in Harnett County, N.C. He was graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., in 1949 and from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law in 1953. Spence practiced law in Lillington, N.C. Paul Eliot Green (1894-1981) also grew up in Harnett County. Green was an author, teacher, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, and humanitarian.
