I. Richard Savage was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 26, 1925. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1944, a master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1945, and a doctoral degree from Columbia University in 1954. Savage was a statistician at the National Bureau of Standards from 1951-1954, and an acting assistant professor of statistics at Stanford University from 1954-1957.
