Étude necessaire, où, reflections morales, militaires et politiques sur les traits les plus interresans de l'histoire de tous les siècles et de la vie de tous les hommes, [circa 1770].

Manuscript of an educational work apparently intended for upper-class young men. Each lesson consists of a brief "extrait historique" from a classical or French author followed by a longer interpretive "reflexion." A wide selection of classical and French authors is represented, including Voltaire and Rousseau. The first two volumes contain general lessons on virtues, moral philosophy, and manners; the third volume covers social classes and the responsilibities of their members, and proceeds to a discussion of political offices and functions. The final two volumes are addressed specifically to "princes," and contain moral and political lessons appropriate to them, including "de l'importance de la religion pour un État;" "de la politesse," and "de la consideration publique." Volumes 1 and 2 have appendices containing moral and instructive excerpts from seventeenth and eighteenth century poetry. All five volumes have tables of contents.
