Commonplace book, [1787-1797].

Manuscript, in a single hand, containing mainly passages transcribed from published works of history, poetry and biography arranged under recurring headings, including History, Poetry, Anecdotes, Characters, and Glossary. There are many excerpts from Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, as well as entries concerning the history of India, France, and England (especially of Hull, Rayne, and Burton Constable). Additional contents include household and agricultural information, and Raines family history and genealogy. "Characters" include Marmaduke Tunstall and William Constable of Burton Constable.
