Map of the commons of Carondelet, Missouri, 1834 July 29.

Manuscript map created during survey work with the United States General Land Office that documents the commons of Carondelet, Missouri as surveyed on March 17, 1834, and drafted on this map on July 29, 1834. This survey conflicted with previous surveys and became central to a dispute between Carondolet and St. Louis over land ownership. The dispute eventually led to the United States Supreme Court case, Carondelet v. St. Louis, 66 US 1 (1861). The map includes an annotation that describes the land, references the survey notes of Elias Rector in 1815, and documents land grants to Gabriel Constant and Julien Choquette. The map also includes the signature of Elias T. Langham, the United States Surveyor General at St. Louis.
