Commonplace book, [circa 1730-1750].

Manuscript in a single hand containing copies of poems, news items, historical anecdotes and moral reflections. Many of the anecdotal items concern campaigns and events of the War of the Austrian Succession, or the deaths of British noblemen; many of the poems appear to have been copied from periodicals, including The Gentleman's Magazine. The volume also contains poems by Ambrose Philips and Alexander Pope; translations from classical authors; and a small number of entries in Latin.
