Album of letters of acknowledgement for "Friend of Sloper" certificates, 1885-circa 1900.

Album containing well over 100 autograph letters of thanks for "Friends of Sloper" certificates, addressed to the comic book character Ally Sloper by Victorian celebrities, including artists, playwrights and producers, actors and actresses, dancers, and music hall entertainers. The letters are humorous and often elaborate expressions of thanks, and their authors include John Singer Sargent, John Everett Millais, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Richard D'Oyly Carte, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, Annie Oakley, Connie Gilchrist the rope-dancer, Okita "the Japanese enchanter," Georgina Weldon, and Viscount Wolseley. The actress Leonora Braham, who played Yum-Yum in the first production of The Mikado, wrote in character. Accompanied by George Moore's "Friend of Sloper" certificate, signed by "Ally Sloper;" a pen-and-ink sketch of Sloper as a muezzin, by W. F. Thomas; and several proof covers for Ally Sloper issues.
