Mary Van Nes's correspondence from Germany detailed her experiences in Berlin as a student of Artur Schnabel from 1931 to 1934. As the letters were received by her family, Van Nes's mother edited and transcribed them into 11 notebooks. This collection includes notebooks 1-5 and 8-11; the collection lacks notebooks 6-7 (April-August 1932).

Artur Schnabel was an Austrian pianist and teacher whose performances and recordings made him a legend in his own time and a model of scholarly musicianship to all later pianists. He lived in Berlin from 1900 and was a leading piano teacher at the State Academy of Music in Berlin from 1925 to 1933.
