In 1729, Catherine Douglas expressed outrage at the Lord Chamberlain's refusal to license the performance of John Gay's Polly (which satirized Sir Robert Walpole). Dr. John Allen (1771-1843) was a political and historical writer. In 1791 he graduated with an MD from the University of Edinburgh. In 1801, in his capacity as a doctor, he accompanied Lord Holland to Spain, and on his return to England became a regular inmate of Holland House.
