Letters, 1771-1790.

Manuscript, in Walpole's hand, of two letters by Walpole. The first, dated 1790 to William Fermor, expresses Walpole's condolences on the death of his mother, Frances Sheldon, Lady Browne. The second, dated 1771 to John Fitzpatrick, Lord of Ossory, is a lengthier letter which discusses printing and antiquarian matters as well as gossip among their acquaintances. Walpole offers to print a pamphlet for Ossory at Strawberry Hill; shares his findings about the foundation and devices of Stoughton; and mentions various romantic attachments and pursuits of the British nobility, as well as gossips about Voltaire and the Duchess de Choiseul. The manuscript also contains typed transcripts of both letters; the dealer's description of the second letter; a brief summary of the life and works of Walpole; and two illustrations, one of Horace Walpole and another of his garden at Strawberry Hill.
