Letters to John Craufurd, 1766-1775.

Manuscript, in Walpole's hand, of three social letters to John Craufurd. The first letter, dated from Paris in 1766, includes a lengthy discussion of their mutual friend, Madame du Deffand, including statements about their love for her and naming her friends and enemies in France. The letter also discusses aging as well as a horse-race scandal in Paris. In the second letter, dated from Strawberry Hill in 1774, Walpole complains of his loss of interest in politics and reading, and describes a social outing with Lady Browne. In the third letter, dated from Arlington Street in 1775, he reports that his health is much improved, except for his right hand, and calls himself an "old woman."
