The mysterious mother, a tragedy, [ca. 1781].

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a transcript of Walpole's tragedic play, written in blank verse, concerning incest and clerical corruption. At the beginning of the manuscript, in another hand, is an excerpt about the play, taken from the September 1797 issue of European Magazine; an excerpt from Walpole's postscript to the play; and a poem titled "To the Honourable Horace Walpole on the perusal of his tragedy of The Mysterious Mother." Following these entries, and in the same hand as the main text of the manuscript, is a copy of the preface by Walpole, dated April 29, 1781, which appears in the London edition of 1781 as well as the Dublin edition of 1791.

Dr. John Allen (1771-1843) was a political and historical writer. In 1791 he graduated with an MD from the University of Edinburgh. In 1801, in his capacity as a doctor, he accompanied Lord Holland to Spain, and on his return to England became a regular inmate of Holland House. Although he served in 1806 as under-secretary to the commissioners for treating with America, Allen is best known for his social life at Holland House, especially as documented in his diary.
