Calligraphy exercise book, 1797.

Manuscript exercise book of calligraphic writing kept by Richard Rowe in 1797. Writing is in pen and brown ink throughout. Rowe employs a number of different styles of script, with multiple styles employed on most pages. Calligraphic embellishments frame many of the pages of text, and some of the calligraphy weaves in subtle representations of faces or animals. On a number of pages the author signs his name, "Richard Rowe scripsit", and he occasionally notes dates, ranging from 21 September to 25 October, 1797. The texts all appear to be copied from published works intended for the moral improvement of youth. They include a number of excerpts from William de Britaine, as well as short extracts from Thomas Dilworth's A new guide to the English tongue, Alexander Pope's An essay on criticism, John Pomfret's Upon the divine attributes, John Dryden's Aureng-Zebe, John Gay's Fables, and others.
