Exchequer accounts, 1774 May 6-1778 April 8.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a record of services Maseres provided in his capacity as Cursitor Baron of the Exchequer, and the fees he charged for them. Most of the entries begin with a description of his attendance in Westminster Hall, where he sat and the work that he performed: administering oaths; swearing bailiffs, under-sheriffs, sheriffs, excisement and other officials as well dismissing them from court. On January 22, 1775, he receives a present from the sheriffs of London of "six loaves of fine sugar, which is a customary present made by them every year to the Cursitor Baron", and he records the annual gifts he makes. He records the fees for examining "the accounts of the committee of the African Company" and "for swearing Mr Anthony Bacon, the contractor for victualling the king's troops in the ceded islands in America, to his account"; and on February 13, 1776 mentions a receipt on "Mr. William Seabrook Wells, deputy comptrollor under Mr. Horace Walpole." He also mentions the routine payments to the "necessary woman of the Court of Exchequer as well as noting receipt of his allowance of pens and paper.
