Accounts for the household of Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales, 1751.

Manuscript, in a single italic hand, written for (or perhaps by) George Lee, Treasurer of the household of Augusta, Princess Dowager of Wales (1719-1772), summarizing the household expenses during the last year of the life of her husband Frederick Lewis, prince of Wales (1707-1751), 21 March 1750-March 20 1751. The index on the first page lists four parts: First, daily livery or allowance to her Royal Highness's family; secondly, number of dishes of meat to each table; thirdly, the prices paid for all manner of provissions; and fourthly, ordinances regulating & making up the accompts of her Roy. Highness's household. The first section records the amounts of wax and tallow lights, beer and ale, bread, wood, and coal allotted to such staff members as the Woman of the Bedchamber, Princess' Necessary Woman, and Children's Necessary Woman, several of whom are named. This section is followed by a brief summer of the number of dishes delivered to Her Highness and family. The third section contains the prices for provisions to be served to Her Royal Highness & family. The manuscript concludes with a detailed description of staff rules for keeping accounts as well as a description of reporting lines and rules for staff conduct.

Sir George Lee (1700-1758) is known for being a lawyer and politician. He entered Christ Church at Oxford in 1720. By 1742 he was a Lord of Admiralty. Admiralty, a department within the British government, oversaw naval matters. In 1751 Sir Lee became dean of arches and a judge of the prerogative court of Canterbury.
