George Cowell letters to Josiah Cowell, 1840 Jan-1842 Feb.

Approximately 50 ALS, nearly all heavily illustrated with pen and ink sketches, from George Cowell in London to his younger brother Josiah in Chelmsford. Subjects include family news; daily work assignments, errands, and activities; an 1840 trip to Calais; and current events such as the wedding of Queen Victoria in 1840 and Parliamentary electioneering in the summer of 1841. Cowell also sends his brother religious and moral advice on topics ranging from observing the Sabbath to avoiding idleness; puns, riddles, word games and comic verse; devotional verse, including a poem on Christmas Day; and extracts from his diary. The sketches accompany every letter and include many large drawings of London street scenes and buildings; the Albion Brewery and its neighborhood; the Thames and the docks; London vehicles and traffic, including omnibuses and the Eastern Counties Railway; individuals and crowds; and caricatures and fantastic alphabets. Other subjects include the ports of Dover and Calais.
