Lee Herron letters to Robert M. Wright and writings, 1913-1914.

Three ALS from Lee Herron to Robert M. Wright concerning Herron's descriptions of encounters with Indians near Fort Dodge in 1866 and 1868. An ALS dated 1913 Feb 15 originally accompanied the first account published in Wright's Dodge City, The Cowboy Capital. The letter records Herron's concern about the article's appropriateness for Wright's book. Two ALS from 1914 Sept detail Herron's ideas for other articles, including one about General Alfred Sully's failed 1868 expedition to the Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma with the 7th Cavalry shortly before the Battle of Washita on November 27. The collection also includes two manuscript drafts of Herron's accounts: "Capturing the Box Family," (15 p.), a description of the rescue of the Box family from Kiowa Indians, published in Wright's Dodge City book; and "Out on the Great Plains in No Man's Land" (33 p.), a description of General Sully's campaign.
